As the new year begins to unfold, we take a moment to look back on 2021 and what we at Bettesworth Scott found ourselves busy with in the year which has passed.

Early 2021 saw us transition from our previous offices in Milnerton to new offices at Atlantic Beach Estate in Melkbosstrand. We continued to mainly work from home, but our new offices provide a space for us to meet together or with our clients, as well as work away from home when we need to. In addition to this, our new offices are down the road from the newly upgraded Atlantic Beach Estate Clubhouse. We played a key part in these upgrades by submitting and obtaining rezoning approval for a General Business spot zone for the Clubhouse. The new Milkwood Deli and Sunbird Restaurants at the Clubhouse are also a great meeting space for us to connect with you over a cup of coffee or a light meal!

Bettesworth Scott remain proud of our ongoing association with Atlantic Beach Estate, for which we undertake the Design Manual, Architectural Review, Building Inspection and Consent to Transfer work. David and Edelynn were very busy in 2021 assessing high volumes of plan submissions on the Estate for additions and alterations - no doubt related to the increased desire for residents to travel less and spend more time living and working on the Estate. We are also busy with a Design Manual review process for three Estates in the Big Bay area and in discussions with other Estates with regards to providing specialist Design Manual/Planning and Architectural Review services.

We were excited to have our initial contract with the Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works extended for a year. Isalde along with the rest of the Bettesworth Scott team is assisting TPWD with a range of services, mostly related to acquiring and developing land for public health and education facilities throughout the province.

Bettesworth Scott remained active in assisting our private development clients with town planning advice, development feasibility assessments and securing planning approval. Our projects are located across the city and beyond, with Martin undertaking work in Philadelphia, Onrus and Jeffreys Bay.

David remains actively involved as a Committee Member of the South African Association of Consulting Professional Planners or SAACPP (South Region), having previously served as Chairperson from 2018-2020. Amongst other responsibilities, he represents SAACPP at monthly meetings with senior City officials to discuss and workshop all things DMS and MPBL. David has assisted the Big Bay Masters Property Association and Bloubergstrand Residents Association, as well as Atlantic Beach Estate in commenting on the draft 2021 Blaauwberg Spatial Development Framework (BSDP), notably in relation to widespread community concerns. He has also drafted a more detailed technical comment on the draft BSDP on behalf of SAACPP.

To conclude, we were satisfied as we signed off the year, having worked hard, made a difference in the industry, and completed a number of projects, resulting in happy clients. Now to look ahead …
